THE CASTLE
Originally there was a fort constructed on the rock of the
Longobard family; destroyed in 590 and then rebuilt by the
Longobards, after the invasion of the Ungaro family it became
part of the large estates of the veronese bishop, then from
1277 to 1387 was handed over to the Scaligero family. Up until
1403 was in the hands of the Visconti family then from 1405
to 1797 apart from a decade from 1506 was part of the estate
of the Serenissima family. In Napoleonic times the French
owned the castle and from 1798 to 1866 the Austrians thatdid
lots of work to strengthen the fortress. on the 22nd of August
1902 the castle was declared a National monument. Nowadays
it contains a small museum dedicated to the territory of the
Lake Garda and a natural heritage of the area of Monte Baldo
in particular rocks, fossils, animal life and pant life. A
room is dedicated to Goethe: there are drawings that the poet
sketched of the lake his trip to Italy.

A journey of 15 min. in a cable car links Malcesine to tratto
Spino(1778 m.)which in the Summer is the starting point of
escursions and treks and in the winter is the access point
to the vast pistes where chair lifts and ski lifts serve over
11 km. of courses of varying difficulties with a difference
in height of up to 400 m.

L'ARIL THE SHORTEST RIVER IN THE WORLD
Cassone an interesting village with a mixture of romantic
walks and pictoresque examples of fiftheenth century, buildings
among those the tower and the port. In its historical centre
flows the river Aril(175 m.)considered to be the shortest
river in the world.
